My Favorite LIp Pencil of All Time

October 13, 2017

I know I know…old ladies often wear the same makeup styles and colors for their whole lives.  Well, not this old lady!  I do have my favorite makeup products, but I try new makeup and new makeup trends all the time.  Some work and some don’t. When I am trying something new, I look in the mirror before I go out the door I say to myself, “WWKS,” which is, “What would Kevyn say.” Kevyn is my daughter, and believe me when I tell you, she cuts me no slack: all she has to do is give me the stink eye and it is back to the drawing board.

And, while I love trying new trends, there are some must haves that I swear by.  This one is probably my longest running go-to makeup product:  Wet-n-Wild Lip Pencil #666.

I found it years ago when I read in a magazine that some Super Model used it all the time, and I was sure that if I used it, I would become a Super Model, too.  I went to Walgreen’s and bought it for $.99.  Since that time I have used lots of other lip pencils, but always go back to 666 (pretend it’s 999 if that number makes you nervous).

It is a wine color with a little bit of brown mixed in.  I am wearing it in my head shot on the cover page of the website.  It works for everyone.  I recently heard a makeup artist refer to it again, and that is probably 20 years later!

I use it on my whole lip, then use a lip balm or Chapstick over it.  And, now I mostly use it by itself as a matte lipstick.  How trendy am I?

The crazy old lady in me comes out whenever I am in the  CVS or Walgreen’s, and I buy all of them in stock, because I am afraid they will discontinue the color and then what would I do!  I probably have dozens tucked away in my bathroom.

Sadly, that lip pencil did not make me a Super Model…good thing they are so affordable for us mere mortals.

Lip Primer That Feels Like Heaven

January 4, 2017

I have to say that I have never met a lip pencil I didn’t like.  OK, what a confession.  And my friend, Linda Crim, gave me this great lip primer by Urban Decay called 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Ozone that is my new obsession.  It is clear, really smooth and luxurious and keeps my lipstick on my lips and out of the cracks around them. They also make a version that is a shorter and fatter pencil, more like a crayon, for anywhere on the face that needs a little extra help.  You can even use it to fill in tiny lines before you put on foundation.  This stuff feels great when I put it on and really holds lip color in place.  I line my lips with the pencil then put an extra line around the outsides of my lips just because it feels so good.  As a rule, I wear a lot of lip pencil as a lip color, so my lips tend to get very dry during this time of year.  Not anymore!

My daughter showed me a similar pencil by Sephora, and I have seen one like the crayon style by Gaella, but I have not tried those yet.   In general, I have become kind of a fan of Urban Decay pencils: they just have a creaminess that I like and seem to last throughout the day.  I call this Ozone pencil my lipstick moat: nothing gets past it.  And I find that having my makeup last for most of the day gets harder and harder as I age.  It is like my skin just sucks it dry before lunch!  Anything that can make me look a little fresher by mid-day gets a big two-thumbs-up from me and this product does the trick.  Give it a try and let me know what you think.

What Could Be Better Than Lip Balm Stain

November 29, 2016

Really.  What could be better than lip balm stain? Nothing, in my book.  And Wet n Wild has done it again with a luxurious balm that does look like a stain when it is applied.  I am not a big stain fan.  I think it looks beautiful when you first put it on but later looks like this little old lady rim around my mouth.  That kind of look that you have when you have already removed your makeup but the pink lip is still there.  This wears off evenly, which is a big plus for me.  I saw a makeup artist using it and had to get the color: 126.  It seems to look great on everyone, according to her.  I gave one to my redheaded daughter and it looked so pretty on her (OK she is 25 with brown eyes and strawberry blonde hair, it isn’t that hard to look beautiful…did I mention she is 25?).  So race to your corner store and stock up on 126 Wet n Wild lip balm.
